Cookie Bake 2006
Posted by Heather on Tuesday, December 19, 2006 (09:29:32) (51 reads)

Every year, my mother's side of the family gets together to bake and decorate cookies. This year, Emily's Nana sent her a nifty shirt to wear. We forgot to bring a camera to the cookie bake, which is a shame, but here's a picture of it. . This is after the cookie bake, when she was both exhausted and hopped up on sugar, which explains the bouncing.

Emily's grandparents are helping to organize a Storytelling Festival in Laurinburg, North Carolina! The festival will run from May 19th to May 20th, and has already managed to sign up some really big names in Storytelling. Emily loves to hear her Nana's stories, and she's really looking forward to it. More information about the festival can be found at www.storytellingfestivalofcarolina.org

Because I ate all that rock salt
Posted by Steve on Friday, August 04, 2006 (13:46:12) (33 reads)

I just recently celebrated my 10 year anniversary with The Charlotte Observer. For my 10 years of service, I was allowed to go to a special website and pick out a service award. After looking over all the various items available, I chose an ice cream maker. Emily has been really into ice cream lately, and I thought it'd be fun for her to help make the ice cream. When it arrived, she was very interested in making some icecream right away. I explained that we had to go to the store first and get ingredients, and that she'd have to wait until tomorrow to make ice cream.

Beach trip 2006
Posted by Steve on Wednesday, June 21, 2006 (10:10:22) (45 reads)

Well, beach trip 2006 has come and gone, and we all had a great time. This was the first year that Heather was able to make the trip. Generally, when Heather goes to St. Louis for SimuCon, Emily and I go to the beach. This year, however, SimuCon was cancelled, so Heather got to see the fun and exciting things that Emily and I do on our vacation.

Fun with vocabulary.

Today's new words for Emily: "noon" and "cannibal."

It's interesting hearing these words come up, because sometimes they reveal a lack that we didn't realize was there.

Emily's dream.
Posted by Heather on Wednesday, February 08, 2006 (17:49:27) (42 reads)

On Monday, Emily had a bit of a cold, so she came home very early from school. She asked me to cut her hair, and showed me just how short she wanted it (just below shoulder-length). After being sure she knew that I couldn't un-cut it once it was cut, I did the honors. She liked it.

The next afternoon, she started talking about long hair.

Today, she asked when it would grow back and started talking about Rapunzel and the prince.

She also drew this picture. I put in the explanation that she gave me.

It'll grow back soon, sweetie.

Imaginary family
Posted by Heather on Monday, January 30, 2006 (09:55:52) (30 reads)

Emily created an imaginary sister for herself a while back, but it keeps getting more and more elaborate. Her imaginary older sister, Kate, has green hair, red eyes, and brown skin. She is in the second grade (this varies) and lives in the oak tree out back. Now Kate has been joined by an imaginary little brother, Kelly. Not too many details on how he looks yet, but he lives in the fenced-in back yard and goes to school with Emily, although he is in a different classroom.

So far she's not blaming anything on them, they're just family members who sometimes sleep in her bed or do things. "I like to dance and Kate likes to dance but Kelly does not like to dance!"

I hope she stops there. Three is enough kids for me, thanks.

All creatures, great and small.
Posted by Heather on Sunday, October 16, 2005 (14:28:13) (30 reads)

I told Emily she couldn't bring a pillbug in the house, and a while later she remembered she had a bug collecting kit. So she pulled that out and we went hunting for pillbugs. We turned over a few bricks and found one, which I told her she could bring into the house in its little plastic case. We had great fun looking at it through a magnifying glass.

Unfortunately, the pillbug met with an unfortunate Emily-related accident and is... uh... sleeping.

I told her "Maybe we should get another pillbug. This one looks sad."

Emily answered, "No, it's not sad!" Then she slammed the lid on the container. "Now it's happy."

Oops. Well, I'll help the pillbug magically disappear back outside after Emily goes to bed.

A good day off.
Posted by Heather on Saturday, October 15, 2005 (00:48:19) (32 reads)

Emily had a great day off yesterday. It was a teacher workday, so she and I palled around town. First we went to Grandma's, and had a great time there. Then it was off to Bruegger's bagels for some lunch. Emily's big on bagels. Next was a stop at the post office, where we ran into her best friend from school, Tania!

They were both super-excited to see each other, and hugged and held hands and had a good time for the few minutes that they were together. Emily talked about it for the next hour or so, she was so happy.

Then we had a first - when we went to see Emily's OT (occupational therapist, for handwriting), Emily ran up to her and smiled and said, "I saw Tania at the post office!" That's the first time she's spontaneously shared something great that happened during her day. Usually we have to tell her, "Tell Daddy/Grandma/whoever where we just went" to get her to start sharing information. This is the first time she's been so excited that she's had a "Guess what!" moment. It was neat to see.
